Permaculture Design Internship 

ROLE
The ideal candidate will bring a passion for learning and an enthusiasm to jump into the task at hand, whether in the field or in the office. The role of the Applied Permaculture Intern is to provide company-wide support in a well-organized and timely manner, under the direction of the leadership of the Plant Coordinator. Additionally, this position provides interdepartmental assistance on many aspects of operations, with an emphasis on supporting the plant coordinator in the stock nursery and subbing onto the install and caretaking crews, as needed. This is a great position for someone who is passionate about plants, wants to learn more about useful and ecologically significant plants, and how they are used in permaculture landscapes.

LEARNING JOURNEY
During your time in this position, you will study the application of permaculture in regenerative landscaping in an urban/suburban setting.

The Intern will:
‣Attend regular 1:1 discovery sessions with various team members
‣Participate in SOG’s signature course: The Regenerative Backyard Blueprint 
‣Gain real-world skills in design, installation, and maintenance of functional permaculture systems, seeing all stages of a project

SCHEDULE
This internship is structured Tuesday thru Friday from 8am-5pm for 12 weeks. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern is accountable to the following work:

Stock Nursery
‣Work under the direction of the Plant Coordinator to maintain and manage the stock nursery, where all plants utilized in projects are staged, cared for, and propagated.
‣Help replant and propagate plants
‣Help facilitate pop-up events, as needed.
 
Design/Install
‣Install sourcing tasks, as needed
‣Assist with special projects
‣Assist with organization and inventory
‣Substitute for crew members on the install team, as needed

Caretaking
Substitute for crew members on the caretaking team, as needed

Additional expectations
‣Arrive promptly 
‣Utilize non-violent methods of communication and interaction ‣when conflict arises
‣Maintain a positive attitude
‣Respond promptly to emails

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
‣Excellent and clear communication skills — both verbal and written
‣Compassionate, helpful, and friendly demeanor
‣Able and willing to learn new skills; learning how to seek answers, problem solve or seek assistance to get the job done
‣Comfortable working with a team
‣Flexible and able to adapt to unique situations
‣Familiar with Google Suite
‣Strong sense of responsibility and ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects with minimal supervision
‣Extremely detail-oriented and highly organized
‣Able to demonstrate discretion and handle confidential information
‣Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
‣Access to reliable transportation

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
36 hours/ week for up to 12 weeks. Competitive stipend.

APPLIED PERMACULTURE INTERN

PERMACULTURE DESIGN INTERN

ROLE
The role of the Permaculture Design Intern is to provide graphic design, marketing, and administrative support in a well-organized and timely manner, under the direction of the Design Coordinator. The Permaculture Design Intern reports primarily to the Design Coordinator, but will be working alongside all members of the design team as needed to facilitate our landscape and product design process. The Permaculture Design Intern will assist our landscape design branch through design tasks such as formatting client presentations and generating client basemaps, and administrative tasks, such as archiving completed designs. As availability allows, the Permaculture Design Intern may provide additional support to marketing and education teams.

This is a great position for someone who is passionate about design, and wants to learn more about the permaculture design process, and how permaculture is applied cross-contextually. 

LEARNING JOURNEY

SCHEDULE
This internship schedule is flexible, to accommodate student schedules, if needed. This position requires approx 16-hrs/ week. This internship ranges between 9-12 months, depending on the ideal candidate.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern is accountable to the following work:

Office tasks
‣Archive client files (digital and hardcopies)
‣Manage server organization
‣Maintain filing of all projects according to filing protocols
‣Notify when supplies are low


Design
‣Work in Photoshop, InDesign, CAD, and Illustrator to build upon design templates

‣Scale base maps by synthesizing survey, topographical, and plat data as directed by the Design Coordinator
‣Digitally format designs
‣Label, edit, print and collate designs, as needed
‣Generate plant lists as guided by the Design Coordinator
‣Adhere to Google Calendar schedule provided by Design Coordinator
‣Aid in special projects, as determined by Design Coordinator

Marketing
‣Assist in developing content, marketing materials, and graphics, as requested

Education
‣Assist marketing team in developing client-facing presentation of educational materials

Additional expectations

‣Check calendar regularly to anticipate upcoming work
