This 160-acre residential farming development is situated along the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, adjacent to one of the largest sea turtle reserves in Central America. We were charged with designing extensive farming operations, nurseries, animal systems, orchards, and useful ornamental landscapes for this multi-phase project. The full build out includes two farm-to-table restaurants, a spa, a hotel, rental facilities, a yoga shala, beach pavilions, and many phases of residences. In conjunction with a civil engineer and a world-renowned architect, we designed an off-grid gravity fed water system to seasonally distribute the rainwater and generate enough water to sustain irrigation throughout the dry season.
In conjunction with a civil engineer and a world-renowned architect, we designed an off-grid gravity-fed water system to seasonally distribute the rainwater and generate enough water to sustain irrigation throughout the dry season. In this part of the world, they have 10 feet of rain in 5-months, and 7-months of zero precipitation. The challenge was figuring out how to economically harvest the rainwater in decentralized locations in order to feed the landscape when there is little rainfall. We addressed this through extensive foundation cisterns designed into the buildings, which over flow through a series of earthworks and ponds, creating wetlands and building soil.
